             Second-hand smoke is the third major preventable cause of death trailing only active smoking and alcohol. As you can see, second hand smoke is not something to be overlooked. Second-hand smoke is the smoke that many pedestrians as well as others who attend many public places where there are no restrictions on smoking breathe when they are near or in the same room as smokers. Second-hand smoke is a mixture of over 4000 substances of which over 42 are guaranteed to cause cancer in animals as well as humans. Second hand smoke is a serious problem which has yet to see a proper solution.
             For greater than 32 years, the U.S. Surgeon General's reports, based on current, accurate scientific evidence, have identified tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke as serious public health hazards. In 1986, for example, reports by both the U.S. National Research Council and the U.S. Surgeon General concluded that second-hand smoke causes lung cancer in adult non-smokers, and that children of parents who smoke have an increased frequency of respiratory symptoms and acute lower respiratory tract infections, as well as evidence of reduced lung function. The American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control: 2003 report clearly shows that numerous states are not taking the necessary precautions to protect both children and adults from the numerous hazardous effects of second hand smoke. Unfortunately, most states have some or no laws to prevent second hand smoke. Yet the truth is that passive smoking, or second hand smoke, is responsible more than 440,000 people die from tobacco-related illnesses each year. A scientific report has emerged during the past 10 years that second-hand smoke is a major cause of lung cancer and respiratory disease in young people, especially children.
