House on Mango Street

             "Role of women in House on Mango Street"
             There were many sections in House on Mango Street that due with the role of women. The role of women in the Spanish culture includes women staying home and caring for her and her husbands children. The women are expected to not work and her spouses income should support her and the children. There are times in the book that women are treated unfairly, like when
             Mamacita has to stay in the house, and when Sally's father says her beauty is a bad thing, and Sally has to go straight home after school and not talk to anybody. These examples are in chapters called "What Sally said" and "No speak English"
             Some women in the book were much more independent than others. For example, Marin has a boyfriend in Puerto Rico, but she is in Esperenza's town selling Avon products and trying to become
             her own independent woman. Also, Esperenza is going to strive to become her own independent women when she moves away from Mango Street. In the book Esperenza says she is going to leave Mango Street in this quote, "One day I will pack my bags of books and paper. One day I will say goodbye to Mango. I am too strong for her to keep me here forever. One day I will go away." ("Mango says goodbye sometimes pg. 110)But there are also women who could not get away, like Esperenza's mother who said, "I could've been somebody, you know?. She has
             lived in this city her whole life." ("A smart cookie" pg. 90)
             The Spanish culture for women is a powerful culture that many women wish they could escape, but they cannot. Some women in the book who can escape normally choose the American culture.
             Esperenza for example is leaning more toward the American culture rather than the Spanish culture. This shows because Esperenza can only speak and write English, but she can still listen to Spanish and know
