The twentieth century is the dawn of media. Newspapers had been around for a long time, but cannot deliver as powerful a message as photography, radio and film. With photography, people finally got to see what others across the world looked like. With few means of communication, everyone assumed the rest of the world was all the same.
             Photography played a large role in society when the brownie camera was introduced. A man named Lewis Hine bought his first camera in 1903 and used his photos in his teaching and started what became known as documentary photography. Hine also used his camera to capture the poverty he witnessed in New York. This included a photographic study of Ellis Island immigrants. In 1908 Hine published Charities and the Commons, a collection of photographs of tenements and sweatshops. Hine hoped he could use these photographs to help bring about social reform.
             Radio was also a powerful means of communication as it made its way into many homes. With radio, you don't have to travel to Vaudeville to enjoy a show. Radio was responsible for the promotion of Jazz music which is still popular today. It also appealed to non English speaking people with radio stations broadcasting in multiple languages. Radio was used to transmit music, news, politics, sports and plays.
             Film was the most powerful form of media. Large groups of people would go out to watch the latest films. American films reflected on the American Dream and on individuals who make a difference. Films where someone made a difference tended to be happy ending films, and dark ending films taught morals. The power of these films would not come from the producers themselves, but from the audiences whom the films appeal to. A famous little girl in entertainment, Shirley Temple, was a star known for uplifting endings. In the 1930's, women began to play a big role in film and shows such as the Little Rascals appealed to kids.
