The Good Earth is about the life and death of Wang Lung. The story starts out on his wedding day, as he gets ready to be married. He is having a traditional farmer wedding, in which his father has chosen his wife to whom he will have many children with. Wang Lung is a common farmer who works in the fields all day next to his ox. Years later, a drought forces Wang, his wife Olan, and their three kids to move south. While there, a revolution broke out and during it, Olan and Wang both snuck into a great house. Here, Olan finds a pouch of jewels. Now they have money enough to go back to the land where thy came form. Olan then gives the jewels to her husband. Wang begins to add to his land. Then the locusts come, and thy nearly destroy his land.
             With the money rolling in, he hires other men to do the work in the fields. Wang now wears silken robes and is clean everyday. With a excess of free time, Wang spends his time at the town tea house. There he meets his second mistress. He takes her home with him to be wed. Wang's household continues to expand with the addition of servants and the children of his own children. Soon, he is head of one of the richest families in town.
             Despite his wealth, Wang's problems continue. His greedy uncle comes to live with him, and there is much fighting among the family. Wang, however, feels that he has succeeded in providing for his family, because of the wealth the land gave him.
             Shortly after Wang's first son's wedding, Olan dies. Wang feels that he is soon to go next. On his death bed, Wang requests that his sons shall never sell the land. His sons agree to it with their fingers crossed behind their backs. They have high hopes of becoming rich fast off of the land. No matter who you are and how much you think you can control, money will always corrupt people in this world.
