             The Sound and the Fury is subdivided into four sections, featuring the narration of either a Compson family member or a servant. The first section comes from the observations of "Benjy" Compson, the 33-year-old retarded son. Faulkner's decision to let the narration of the first section reflect Benjy's inarticulate, rambling style makes for difficult reading, and the fact the he has no comprehension of time doesn't make following the story any easier. However, Faulkner's choice has made the simplistic Benjy all the more affecting.
