Certain individuals who had enough money started radio their own radio stations, established newspaper companies and new television stations. Two Nigerian television stations Minaj Broadcasting International (MBI) and African Independent television (AIT) which are both privately owned, started beaming their signals on satellite, which made it possible for Nigerians in the United States of America to watch their stations, and keep in touch with all the gossip, politics, economy, sports and current affairs occurring within the country. Nigerians or anyone who was interested in being able to watch the channel would have to subscribe the channel from their local cable network dealer at monthly fee. That was a major break through for Nigerian television.
Among the peaks for the media in Nigeria is when the country won the 2001 Miss World beauty Pageant. The spotlight was on Nigeria. The media had a field day with the event. Newspapers, the radio, magazines and televisions even made songs about the new Miss world. The timing could not have been better as Nigeria was really going through some difficult times. There was unemployment and crime, the country was going through economic problems, so much corruption existed among people in power.
