The philosophy at Camp Green Lake was that if you made a boy dig a hole 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep everyday, it would improve his character. Stanley blamed his luck on his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. There were 5 groups at camp, A, B, C, D, and E. Stanley was assigned to group D. Stanley became friends with the other boys in group D including Squid, Armpit, Zig-Zag, X-Ray, Magnet, and Zero. They all had nicknames used at camp and Stanley was given the nickname of Caveman because he was a big guy. The weather there was absolutely wretched. The boys had to wake up at 4:00 AM everyday to avoid digging during the hottest part of the day. There was a scarce amount of water so they were only allowed to take 4 minute showers and given water periodically throughout the day.
