Technology, the literal definition of the word is, the application of science, especially to industrial or commercial objectives. Technology is all around us, at one point of another everything was a breakthrough, just think, the pencil, fire, the wheel, no matter how common something is to us today, at one point in history it was the latest and the greatest. But we as a society, in today's world, view it as more than just that. We see it as something that usually involves some sort of computer process to accomplish. It's nearly impossible to go an entire day without having technology affect you in some way or another. The questions I pose are; Why is it that we continuously want bigger (metaphorically speaking), better, and faster? Tomorrow's promises are just short of an old SciFi movie. Where is the line that we aren't going to cross? All this technology is both helping and hurting us, yet we thirst for more and more. Is there any hope left for tomorrow, or are we going to eventually invent ourselves out of existence?
             The best two pieces of work that I believe examine the ins and outs of technology very well are Neil Postman's "Five Things That We Need to Know About Technological Change" and Robert Naisbitt's "Our Technologically Intoxicated Zone". These works summarize technology as a whole and then break it down.
             The most common question that is asked when it comes to technology is, "Why do we always push for bigger, better, and faster?" There are many ways to attack this inquiry. But before you can answer that you must first realize something.
             Technological change is not additive; it is ecological. I can explain this best by an analogy. What happens if we place a drop of red dye into a beaker of clear water? Do we have clear water plus a spot of red dye? Obviously not. We have a new coloration to every molecule of water.
