Gattaca

             'Gattaca shows that who you are is more important than how you were born.'
             Gattaca shows a world where the ideology of self-advancement and genetic enhancement prevails. From the opening scene, the audience is shown of the high importance of genetics with the imagery of the enlarged fingernails and hair, which come crashing to the ground, and also the highlighting of the letters G, A., T and C, which are the four basic nucleotides which make up DNA. However although this suggests that people with better 'genes' have greater potential, through the character Vincent, who is of natural birth, one is shown that despite his limited potential, he supercedes the genetically enhanced characters. Vincent throughout the text shows passion an spirit, and through comparison to other characters such as Jerome and Anton, this suggest that who you are is more important that how you were born.
             In a world where genetic profiling rules, we are shown of the genetic discrimination that Vincent is subject to. Through using such imagery as; the close up when the gate to a school gets shut in Vincent's face, and the scene's where Vincent scrubs of his inferior body parts while being shadowed by 'bars' which represent his imprisonment from the real world, Niccol demonstrates the struggle that Vincent faces in attempt to break free of his predetermined destiny. While he admits that his 'resume was in [his] cells,' Vincent's passion to fulfill his dream becomes the driving spirit which shows his true character.
             Upon birth, Vincent's exact time of death' was determined, along with several conditions which he is likely to suffer from including a chronic 'heart disorder'. However it is ironic that Vincent shows more 'heart' that any other character in the text, where the heart represents will power and spirit. In comparison to his 'superior' bro
