4.- Explore the symbolic implication of the elements we discussed
             This essay is based on the main symbols that we discussed of the story “the secret sharer”. Each symbol represents something else that what the symbol really is. There are four important symbols on the story.
             The sleeping suits that they use are identically, both owned by the captain. These represents the way they “communicate”, because they both use the same suit and sleep on the same bed. A coincidence is that the captain wears the same size than Legatt, this is because its his mind creation, he also has the same hair colour and other characteristics. This sleeping suit, makes Leggatt be associated with the night, and people who lives at night are normally criminals, and this makes him be really different compared to the captain, Leggatt is representing the dark side of the captain, the side he always keeps inside him cause of his lack of self-confidence.
             The most important symbol of the story is Leggatt. Yes, a person is considered as a symbol, this person was created by the insanity of the captain, caused by a need to help himself, or mature. Opposite to the captain, proving what I said before, Leggatt is very unrational, and a criminal. Although he is described as a person, there are some things that make the reader realise that he is irrational “He was complete but for the head. A headless corpse!”. Also the captain says that he looks like a fish, so this makes to believe that is more irrational even. At the end of the story Leggatt transform again on to a fish.
             The scorpion can be considered a symbol too. Its fin by the chief mate in his cabin. In the story the scorpion makes the made ask himself why he choose his cabin. This question can be used with Leggatt, and this is why it symbolises the arrive of Leggatt.
