How comedy has changed in film

             -a comparison of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) to Scary Movie 3 (2003)
             These two comedies have been very successful in there time. They have attracted innumerable crowds of fans and have pleased many with the absurdist comedy style. Even though there is 28 years been between these colossal comedies there are still some obvious similarities and some not so obvious differences.
             The Pythons' material mixed sophisticated cultural references with slapstick and immature crudeness, and their stream-of-consciousness style avoided punch lines in favour of bizarre coincidences and running gags. The Scary Movie's text is somewhat different and presents an unconventional and eccentric hilarity that pokes fun at the unintentional of the sometimes predictable and comical product of horror movies.
             Both comedies are made for their time and for their time only. So therefore one shouldn't expect to find both of them funny even though it is possible. This is because each comedy relies on their audience to have a common knowledge of the subject matter. This knowledge changes over time and things that everyone knows about become irrelevant. Therefore comedy has to change over time to accommodate the changing society.
             Monty Python and the Holy Grail jests at the common suburbia customs in the 1970's and puts it in context of the middle ages. For example the fearsome Knights of Ni wanting a shrubbery for a pass to go through the forest. When they found a shrubbery they said and I quote "We want a another shrubbery, but this one only slightly higher, so it has a nice two level affect, with a nice little path running down the middle." As you can see it is totally ridiculous and that's why it is so humorous.
