ining independence and organization for miners started slowly; one or two men were "household" names, such as Joe Hill and Charles Moyer. The labor movement didn't get a lot of support at first. Haywood had been in the mines more than half his life when he threw himself into labor union work. One of his first big jobs was founding a local chapter of The Western Federation of Miners in Utah. This was a jumpstart to his lifelong labor career. His passion and ambition rose, as well as his rank in union politics. Many supporters of the union movement were not as aggressive as Haywood was. He was one to demand attention of everyone around him. Protests, strikes, and other forms of rebellion were his weapons, injustice his ammunition. While other men sought after a quieter, meeker labor union, Haywood made sure everyone involved knew that being bold and outspoken was a necessity.
             Growing tired of the W.F.M, Haywood found it necessary to have "one big union"(see: William Haywood). Such a feeling of suffocation, need for unity, and expansion led him to help found the largest union, The Industrial Workers of the World. This was the strongest and most radical union, commonly called " The Wobblies"(see: Faces of Protest: Bill Haywood). The men and women who helped make this group happen had a kind of celebrity reputation in the eyes of workers, though nothing was glamorous about being knocked unconscious at a protest, or being thrown in jail for organizing a strike. They were admired because they were able and willing to fight; ready to stand up to the lions of injustice and make things happen. Haywood was one of those figures.
