             Organizations all have a mission of business continuity, which is to protect their business services and data from being crippled due to outages either planned or unplanned. Planned outages can include system upgrades and maintenance to servers. Unplanned outages are more disconcerting as they can come from a number of unknown places. One should view business continuity plans as including risk management, facilities management, knowledge management, supply chain management, quality management, health and safety, emergency management, disaster recovery, security, and crisis communication and PR.
             Although all are important to being able to continue service and productivity, we concentrate on disaster recovery and security within information technology for this research.
             With unplanned situations like the 9/11 attacks and the electrical blackout in August 2003, organizations are beginning to understand the importance that information system security has on their business continuity efforts. There are three business drivers that have brought this attention to the discussion among top level managers about business strategy: the rising cost of downtime, available technology, and heightened risk awareness. According to a survey by Mirifex and Case Western Reserve University, over 20% of the respondents lost over $50,000 per hour of downtime, and nearly 4% lost more than $1 million for each hour of downtime and that nearly half of the respondents said that lost employee productivity was the largest contributor to losses due to the blackout (Price, 2004, p. 48-49). A mere minute of downtime can have catastrophic results in an organizations bottom line by crippling the ability of both the company and their clients to have access to vital information.
