In Griet's world 17th century Delft, there are men that exploit her innocence either intentionally or unintentionally but there also men that do not have any intentions of ever exploiting Griet. Griets life is isolated ranging no further than her family and those see knows at church and the market for emplample Griet's family butcher.
             Havinf such an isolated life has given her little knowledge about the intentions of men resulting in unsurity on how to behave around then. Her sheltered up bringing has left her unworldly and nieve about certain things, being also a young woman of 16 of the 17th century are all good reasons on why mwn could exploit Griet.
             Van Ruijven is shown in "Girl with a pearl earring" as the most well known person to exploit Griet. "his intentions are never honourable when it comes to young women" making advances on Griet when ever the opportunity arised "he managed to slide his hand along my thigh". Because of his high status in town there is nothing that Griet or the Vermeer family can do about his advances. If given the opportunity which Van Ruijven greatly wants will result in the same situation as the girl with the red dress.
             Jans Greit's father is not the same type of person as Van Ruijven even though he also exploits Griet. Van Ruijven's exploitation is seen as intentional only wanting Griet as a se object. Jan exploits Griet purely out of surivial. Regretting having to exploit her "I'm sorry, Griet.
