The largest room belongs to Guinevere and Richard. It is simple and bare and the only pieces of furniture to be found are the bed, washbasin, a small table with two chairs, and a clothing chest. The bed is quite impressive, though, and sits in the middle of the room. It is "a great canopied bed as much as eight feet long and seven feet wide, the straw-filled mattress hung on rope suspenders and covered with linen sheets, blankets of wool and fur, and feather pillows" (Gies 44). Guinevere walks down the short, dank hallway to wake her son, Carlton. He is five years old. He too wears long linen undergarments and wool trousers, a tunic, and a surcoat on top of these (Bigelow 122). Soon, he will begin to watch and learn the trade of his father.
