p an understanding of the research process as well as the skills to judge the value and significance of the research in hand. The major steps involved in the research process include; identifying a problem or issue that needs to be solved, reviewing the literature, designing a research approach that will address the question, data collection and analysis, analysing and interpreting the findings and finally arriving at a solution and communicating the results (Schneider, Elliot, LoBiondo & Haber 2003). It is important that the framework of the research is appropriate as this affects the results obtained. Research designs can be categorised as either quantitative or qualitative. Quantitative refers to the use of statistical analysis, using 'structured procedures and methods under controlled conditions' (Santy and Kneal 1998). Qualitative research focuses on understanding meanings and interpretations made by human beings in their everyday context (Sandelowski 1995).
It can be said that the purpose of research is to generate knowledge. Therefore, research is greatly significant to the practice of graduate nurses in a number of areas. Research is important for nurses to be able to keep up with changes in the delivery of health care; advances in technology, new diseases emerging from antibiotic resistant micro-organisms, demographics changed, increased demand on health care and a move towards evidence based
