old north durham

             The living condition in North Durham has changed dramatically since my adolescent years. As a child I lived on 908 Gurley Street, located off the corner of Dowd Street. My neighborhood was called North Durham. Many different areas of Durham were known as the Southside, West End, East Durham, Wall-town and etc... Theses areas are consider what part of town you reside in. I remember when I first heard of this, a classmate of mine named Chris ask me one day what part of town you're from? My response was I live down the street. He was like Oh! You live in North Durham. Ever since then I referred my neighborhood as North Durham.
             North Durham is a small community that's surrounded by houses; two churches name Union Baptist and Mt.Gilead Baptist Church, Ellis D. Jones Funeral Home, and East End elementary school. My home was a yellow house, with verdant green grass, lovely blossoms azaleas and flowery shrubbery that was right across from the church playground and sided by the church parking lot and my neighbor Mrs. Geneva. Mrs. Geneva was a little old lady, about 5ft tall, always wore her wigs on the wrong side, but a lovely lady. Everyone in the neighborhood called her the den mother, because that's was she was to everyone. She accepted anyone that was in need and took them in as her own. The kid's as well love her because she sold ices, popcorn, and pickles, and one cent candy. I remember running home after school, knocking on Mrs. Geneva door trying to be the first in line to get a red ices and one-cent candy.
             The neighborhood was fill with love, life, quiet and a safe haven. The major roles for this was children were raised by other neighbors and disciple actions were firm, children had responsibility, parents then participated in school and community activities with their kids, the church was very involve in the community, the community was involve in
