Food4Less has a sales base ordering inventory management system, known as Stock Management III (SMIII), introduced in 1992. This was fully implemented to centrally distribute many of their product ranges, including; grocery, beers, wines and spirits and non-food department items. SMIII's aim was to improve the accuracy of stock ordered in the stores, reducing the number of out of stock produce and therefore maximizing sales. Additionally, reducing wastage, reducing back stocks and creating a consistency in merchandising practices.
SMIII uses data collected in each store to work out the sales forecast for each product using the store inventory (appendix A). It then converts these quantities for ordering. These processes rely on data input for accuracy.
There is a time delay with SMIII unlike the Point-of-Sale (POS) system, which plays a significant role in Wal-Mart's success. When you buy a tube of toothpaste from the local Wal-Mart store, its bar code is scanned at the checkout counter. A WalMart-owned and -operated satellite communications network passes the scanned information to the Bentonville, AK database. The system subtracts the purchase from the total inventory in the supply chain and automatically directs both store replenishment and supplier purchase transactions. The following day, a bar-coded label printed at the DC tells the order clerk to pull that product from the storage bin and place it on the conveyor. A bar-code reader automatically routes the product along the conveyor to a truck that will deliver it to the appropriate store. The toothpaste you buy at 4 p.m. today will be restocked in the store by 10 p.m. tomorrow.
