A Time to Fly

             Imagine that your father was the military general who freed a nation. That he became a national hero and was freely elected by the people to lead. Then imagine he was assassinated three months later. A military junta now runs that nation, with an iron fist. Imagine a massacre to dwarf Tiananmen Square or Amritsar; a people oppressed for a century. Imagine that their last hope lies in the daughter of that national hero. She leads the only true Opposition Party – the National League for Democracy. Imagine, that that nation is Burma, and that she, is Aung San Suu Kyi.
             Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Every few centuries, there is born a struggle, which forces us to review our fundamental beliefs, our very humanity. We should be outraged at the atrocities perpetrated by the Burmese government. But we aren't, because no media is allowed in there. What goes on in Burma, stays in Burma.
             Under this military rule my friends, there is no beauty, no truth, no dignity, no freedom. Twelve year old Naw Po Thu was pressed into forced labour by Burmese troops. She was repeatedly raped, then, shot dead. A military officer offered her family 'compensation' of about 50 cents in rice, sugar and milk. A horrific scenario. The people of Burma have acquired their moral ascendency, their right to protest. They have paid for it with their blood spilt in massacres four times larger than Tiananmen Square.
             Aung San Suu Kyi remains the Burmese people's candle of hope. Fatherless at an early age, she was educated at Oxford, where she graduated with a degree in Law. She elected to return to Burma, knowing the dangers that existed. Much of her life has been spent under house arrest, or secretly imprisoned in the infamous Insein Jail.
