Family Abuse and Domestic Violence

             Domestic violence is abuse; it can be mental, verbal abuse or physical. For example, some types of domestic and family violence include beating, pulling hair, choking, stalking, and homicide. There are many standard terms for domestic abuse, in chapter one goes into at least thirteen types, for example, dating violence, elder abuse, neglect, and spousal abuse. At one point, domestic abuse was the worst type of call for the police; unfortunately, since the times changed, so has the fact that domestic abuse is more common. Unfortunately, in the past, things that occurred in the home stayed in the house. As times have changed, so has the fact that things that happen in the home do not have to wait there. Many people feel that domestic violence is on the rise because of the climb in statistics. Unfortunately, that is only slightly true. Due to the times changing and people changing, so has people's voices, men and women are not as afraid to speak out as they once were (women more so than men); because of this, our statistics show a better idea of abuse then they did thirty years ago. Domestic violence can sometimes be classified as assault, murder, rape, battery, or stalking, depending on the severity of the situation. Some questions that arise with domestic abuse are: since the statistics are not entirely correct due to people not reporting incidents, how many people are affected by domestic abuse each year? This answer will never be answered because people do not report domestic abuse. People are too scared or ashamed or do not want to talk about it. Abuse happens to people of all ages in the home in all different ways; because of this factor, there are more reasons people do not speak out and come forward about their abuse.
