In 1946 the International Roundup Clubs decided to make Pawhuska, Oklahoma the home/host of the Cavalcade held every year since 1946. This cultural event host’s a variety of exciting events. It is a six-day western sports jamboree. Since its conception the Cavalcade Committee has worked towards annual improvements, adding electric hook-ups, water lines, repairing fences and making other needed improvements. There are eight rodeo performances; all events include something for everyone. There are bareback bronco riding, bull riding, wild horse races, team roping, wild cow milking, calf roping, pony express races, barrel races, pole bending, flag races, chuck wagon rolls and of course Queen of the Rodeo contest. This cavalcade is noted as one of the greatest armature rodeo events in the world. The legacy of the Jim Dickey Memorial Queen’s Crown began in 1989 by the Kellyville Round-up Club. This is a great honor for the young lady who is crowned Queen for the year. (Pg 7 Cavalcade) One of the more exciting events for all ages is the dance, Pawhuska closes down Main Street, places stacks of hay bales for people to sit on, American flags are hung throughout the street. There are hot dogs, cokes for everyone to eat and enjoy. All participants dress up in their finest western apparel and even the smallest of cowboys and cowgirls get into the action.
This cultural event has been here since 1946 and grows in popularity every year, with more and more roundup clubs join in the celebration. Pawhuska is the county seat for Osage Reservation, which makes the Cavalcade all the more unique. On Saturday the town shuts down some of the streets and the whole town shows up for the annual Cavalcade parade.
