The Tell-Tale Heart

             The Policemen looked at me with disbelief and horror. "Calm down man" said one of them, "what are you talking about?" I glanced at them; they stood rooted to the very spot with apprehensive looks on both faces. I scanned the room, the beating was merely audible. Through my frustrated head I caught the words of the men tearing apart the boards, and then listen! I couldn't stand it anymore... I screamed again: "Stop! Stop!" I ran at one policeman knocked him to the wooden floor, the second one tried to overpower me but I ducked and fled from the room. Again more, clearly than ever, the voices grew louder! And louder! They weren't dull anymore, but strong and sonorous. My head was aching with tiredness. I ran forward, I didn't dare to look back. Everything around me seemed to be blurred. It appeared that I didn't belong to this world. I stopped for a while, thinking about what I have done. My heart had a burden beyond endurance, and then I understood. The sound I heard before was my very conscience. I'm not a madman after all! I laughed, old man's vulture eye would not haunt me anymore! But what am I going to do next? I thought. The whole investigating department is going to look for me! Now my feelings changed, I wasn't bothered with guilt, but anxiety. Trying to decide I spent some time in thoughtfulness. Unawaresly, the piercing sound broke the silence of surroundings. I jumped to my feet but did I? I felt as though I was floating in midair, higher and higher...Flashes of pictures were showing before my eyes. I didn't know what was happening. Again everything turned out of focus. Sounds of barking dogs, screaming people, everything was muted. Darkness fell, I was floating...
