             Genetically, Vincent is supposed to be weak, yet his strength of character is the key to the story.
             Vincent Freeman is born into a world where weakness isn't tolerated and individuals with flaws our out cast and looked down upon. It is a society that has been overwhelmed by the relentless pursuit of perfection. The society of Gattaca has decayed along with true human qualities. Vincent Freeman's strength of character and desire to achieve his dreams and voyage into outer space shed some light in on this bleak, dark sterile not too distant future. Vincent shows true human qualities and triumphs over the constraints his genetic destiny for told. He beats the system.
             "My destiny was mapped out before me all my flaws, predispositions and susceptibilities - most untreatable to this day. Only minutes old, the date and cause of my death was already known "HEART DISORDER - 99% - EARLY FATAL POTENTIAL.". "LIFE EXPECTANCY - 33 YEARS". Vincent was born genetically imperfect and because of this he was seen has an outsider. He was labelled an "in valid" because his genes weren't genetically manipulated at birth. He was destined to live out life, working menial jobs. A new form of discrimination has arisen, it was called genoism. As a child Vincent was seen as weak and treated as though he was chronically ill. His own father saw Vincent as unfit of his fathers Name Anton. Vincent is constantly put down and shut out from society.
             Andrew Niccol uses a variety of film techniques to convey this point. A strong example used to emphasise Vincent's isolation from society, is when Niccol shows a close up of the day care centre gate slamming shut in Vincent's face. The camera than pans down to a close up of Vincent's hand, on the iron gate. This symbolises Vincent's determination, even at a young age.
