This essay deals with the changes of our daily student life due to the introduction of student fees. In Austria we have had tuition fees for about three years now. Austrian students and students from the EU have to pay 363.36 euros per semester, while people from outside the EU are charged 726.72 per semester. Furthermore, we must all pay 14, 50 euros for our student representation called "Österreichische Hochschülerschaft". These fees are paid directly to the university at the beginning of each semester and for many people this means a big financial debt.
             The supporters of student fees might argue that they need the money to improve the level of education and also those of the facilities. Moreover, an intended side effect is that student fees should cause a decrease in the number of long-term students. It is worth mentioning that we have in Austria a well working social safety net. Many students get the fees back from the state if their parents don't earn enough money. Due to that fact poorer people will be able to study even though the fees are charged.
             However, things are not as easy deal with as they seem. It is true that some universities should get more money for the refurbishment of their facilities, but these costs should be paid directly by the state. Many students have to work during their studies because life is getting more and more expensive. The more they have to work, the longer they will need for studying. This is a vicious circle. I can deduce, therefore, that the average time needed for studying won't be shorter. And what about the part time students? These people often attend only a few courses due to lack of time per semester, but they also have to pay the full amount of student fees. I am of the opinion that this is unfair. There should be a better system for those students.
