Utilitarianism

             In the movie Gattaca there are many moral issues and questions that the movie shows. The movie is based on the future and what people think will happen in the future. A major thing that the movie indicates is that people will be genetically produced for the best qualities. The better and healthier the babies, the better the workers will be. This causes the people who were born the original way to be discriminated against because they are not as healthy or strong has the genetically produced people. They are not allowed to participate in certain jobs because they are not "made" for that purpose. In the movie a character by the name of Vincent is an original born person who buys the life of a genetically produced person to become an astronaut. This produces an issue to the utilitarian perspective. Is it morally acceptable for a person to pass as someone they are not? This paper will bring up issues from a Utilitarian perspective and answer that question.
             An Act Utilitarian says, "You are always to act in a way that promotes the best results." In the movie an unhealthy original born person buys the life of a genetically produced person to become an astronaut and go to one of Saturn's moons. In order to become an astronaut you must be a healthy genetically born baby, and he was not. Since this was the only way for him to achieve his goals he bought the life of the genetically born person. I believe that in doing this an Act Utilitarian would suggest that he is not acting in a way that produces the best results because if because of his health he endangers the mission he could harm more people and the mission. Also if anyone were to pretend to be someone they are not they could end up ruining other peoples lives in doing this.
