Throughout the ages, much of people's lives have surrounded some belief system. In the "Grand Inquisitor" the Catholic faith is examined. Way back when Jesus first roamed the world, many people started to believe in him. After he died people continued to believe he would return one day. He had not returned for over 20 centuries and within this time, specifically the sixteen and seventeen hundreds, the church ruled. Some of the clergy in the church were corrupted. This invites the questions, is the Grand Inquisitor one of the corrupted? Is he really saving people when he burns them after confession? Why does he tell the Lord (god) that he is interfering? How grand is the Grand Inquisitor?
             Is the Grand Inquisitor corrupted? This question would bring in a wide variety of answers. I think he is corrupted because of how he deceives people into thinking that he is doing the burnings for God: "No science will give them bread as long as they remain free but in the end they will lay down their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Better that you enslave us, but feed us' (421)" He is corrupted by power and the drive to be more. He has the people eating out of his hand because they cannot feed themselves when they are free. He is playing God in a manner of speaking. He decides who will live and who will live and who will die. " They will marvel at us and look upon us as gods because we, standing at their head, have agreed to suffer freedom and to rule over them."
             The Grand Inquisitor says that he is saving heretics and sending them to heaven when he burns them at the stake after their confession of questioning their faith. Is he really saving them though? The inquisitor has become so mad with power that he no longer thinks of what is for god, but has become so radical that he will jump at any chance to stay in power.
