To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is a book about a town of cowards. It is set in Maycomb county, Alabama. There are only a few brave people in the book. Two of those people are Mrs. Dubose and Atticus Finch.
             The reason Maycomb is a town of cowards is because even though the Jury knew the defendant, Tom Robinson, was innocent they said he was guilty. They were too scared to go up against a town that hated tom Robison for his skin color. People like Mayella Ewell took out her fear and guilt on Tom Robinson because of what she did, for example when Atticus says, "I say guilt Gentlemen because it was guilt that motivated her. She has committed no crime. She has merely broken a time-honored code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with." This shows that she was just afraid that, because of what she did, people would treat her like dirt, afraid.
             The character in the book that showed the most courage is Atticus finch. When Mr. Finch went up against Bob Ewell he was also going up against the whole town of Maycomb because he happened to be defending a black man. Even though he knew that it wouldn't be easy but he still took the case because he wouldn't be able to respect himself if he didn't. The most courageous thing he did was stand up to the whole town, rigid, and never bending in his beliefs.
             Another courageous person in the book was Mrs. Dubose. At first she seemed like a plain old mean lady. But her image radically changes when Atticus says, "I wanted you to see that courage is not just a man with a gun in his hand.....She was the bravest person I ever knew." This means that there are many different ways of being brave. In Mrs. Dubose's case, brave means risking pain to get off of morphine before she died.
