There is a study team, based at Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence, whose aim, according to a notice in a campus newsletter, is "to develop a clearer understanding of the many ways in which people experience bullying, intimidation, humiliation, put-downs, victimization, aggression, and other forms of bullying in the workplace." Researchers have identified some characteristics for acts of workplace violence:
· Workplace violence is usually committed by males under the age of 35
· Offenders usually act alone
· External threats from outside the workplace are greater than internal threats (e.g., employees)
· Service industries are at greater risk than manufacturing industries
· Handguns are the weapons of choice, used in 64% of incidents
· Excessive interest in weapons is found in 39% of perpetrators
· 90% of offenders have a psychiatric diagnosis
· Personality disorders comprise the largest diagnostic group
