Response to "Bliss" and "The String"
While reading "Bliss", I was really curious to find out what would happen between Miss Fulton and Bertha. I assumed that Bertha's strange, but quite powerful attraction to Miss Fulton would lead to an affair of her own. However, my prediction is shattered when Bertha realizes that Miss Fulton is in fact, having an affair with her husband. Beyond being shocked by the surprising ending, I also felt strong emotion of anger and sadness for Bertha. It hurt me so much more knowing that Bertha's innocence and optimistic view ultimately led herself to blind-sided crash with disaster.
At the end of "Bliss", many questions are left for readers to ponder. After revealing the true identity of Miss Fulton, story ends abruptly without providing any hint or suggestion of what's to come. The readers just have to leave the book only knowing that Bertha would be in despair. There are no falling actions after the climax. However, in "The String," the falling action is described in detail, letting the readers know exactly what happens to the protagonist after the climax. Even though he is innocent, he faces unjustifiable death.
Secondly, the writing style is different. In "The String", the author focuses on the real events that has happened and writes in journalistic fashion. The setting is described in concrete language and the tone of the paper is especially realistic, showing its world of feeling directly. The usage of symbolism and metaphor is very limited and depicts the story very straightforward. However, in "Bliss", the story is told through much abstract language. The author uses symbolism and metaphors to describe state of mind of protagonist. The writing style is much softer and romantic than "The String".
