erwhelmed with vehicles during busy times of the day. Traffic officials determined that more than a third of vehicles on city streets during rush hour were cutting through town to beat the traffic (Miller 1). Traffic in southern California is and should be a concern for the people who live here because it greatly affects them.
A countless number of people die on freeways every year. Even more die when busy traffic causes dangerous conditions. One of these conditions includes accidents on the freeway, which causes drivers to not pay attention to the road. If no one is watching were they are going, there is an accident waiting to happen. Traffic also causes people to lose their patience and go out of control causing and inflicting road rage. Traffic is the main cause of this road rage. When people are late and still stuck in backed up traffic they very easily lose their temper and go nuts cutting innocent people off, and sometimes crashing or even causing someone else to crash. Every day innocent people are targeted as victims of angry people who drive erratically, with no care for anyone. The more a person commutes, the more likely he or she will become part of the reason the traffic is backed up, the accident.
Congested freeways cost people money. For example, when commuters sit in stop and go traffic their gas is just wasting away. Honda Motor Company found that when driving in stop and go traffic vehicles get fewer miles to each gallon of gas compared to when they go non-stop on the freeway (Accord Sedan Specifications & Features 1). Another costly affect of stop and go traffic is the wear and tear it puts on vehicles. A considerable amount of stress is put on vehicles that face long waits on the freeways or around town. The Automobile Club of Southern California found that "it cost six cents more per mile [to operate a vehicle] if the vehicle is commuted in heavy traffic compared to free flowing commute"...
