brassica rapa

eloped at the University of Wisconsin designed distinctively for lab work. It is a product of a mustard plant, which is in the same genus as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower (Runquist, 20004). Brassica rapa is an excellent lab plant because it grows, germinates, and flowers quickly. Seeds usually germinate within twenty-four hours after being planted (Russell, et al. 1990). Two types of Brassica rapa were used in the experiment. The standard wild type was used for the control while the Rosette mutants were used as the variable for the experiment. Gibberellic Acid is a hormone present in all plants to regulate their growth. The Rosettes have a recessive mutation which disallows them to produce the natural growth hormone, Gibberellins. Consequently, the Rosettes will have a significantly much less growth and growth rate than that of the wild type. If the plant produces its own Gibberellic Acid they are called endogenous hormones, and because Brassica rapa is lacking in this ability, they must be added exogenously by the experimenter (Runquist 2004).
The questions that are trying to be answered by the experiment is whether the exogenous added Gibberellic Acid will have a positive or negative effect on the Brassica rapa Rosette mutant plants and what is the most effective concentration of GA that will cultivate or hinder the growth of the Rosettes. In this experiment, we are comparing the growth of the Rosette mutants to the control wild type after different concentrations of Gibberellic Acid (GA) is applied to exogenously. The application of GA has been known to accelerate the cycle of a plant. Rosettes only contain about one tenth the normal level of GA, causing them to be naturally small and responsive to artificial application of Gibberellic Acid (Cleland 1967). A dosage response curve effectively shows the relation between the different concentrations of GA and the plant growth of the Gibberellins-lacking Rosette m...
