ing the black guys to walk off of the court in shame. Danny, Derek's little brother, was there for the whole thing.
             After seeing that the guys that were trying to steal his car were black, Derek was furious with anger and only knew his neo-Nazi ways, and without thinking twice about the situation, killed the men with no remorse, right in front of his little brother, who looked up to Derek as if he were a king. Derek went to jail for only three years for the killings, and we find out later in the film that if Danny had testified in the case, and hadn't stuck up for his brother, Derek would have gone to jail for life.
             The movie then moves to present time, where Danny's teacher, his mother's Jewish ex-boyfriend, is talking with his principal Mr. Sweeney, a black man, about a paper that Danny wrote for his history class. The paper, entitled, Mein Kampf, was an argumentative paper, which claimed Hitler as a civil rights hero. The principal then takes the initiative to change Danny's history class to a new class, taught by Mr. Sweeney himself, entitled American History X, where Danny's first assignment is to write a new paper about all of the events surrounding his brothers incarceration and the effects that that had on his and his family's lives.
             The movie goes on to show the 24 hours after Derek was let out of prison, and what he went through with his family. It also shows a series of flashbacks that show things that Derek and Danny did leading up to the murders. In these flashbacks, the audience is shown some of the reasons why Derek feels so much hate for those other than whites. The main reason, although not too clear, seems to be because Danny and Derek's father was murdered putting out a fire in a black neighborhood.
