             The other main characters are also used by Golding as mechanisms to make social comment. Ralph is shown within the novel to be a possible leader, and a rival to Jack. Jack views Ralph as a threat, and like many political parties he undermines him. Golding uses Ralph as a symbol of the aerian race by his characteristics, and co-alliance with the symbol of Hitler. It is important to notice that the novel has direct ties with World War Two, because even though much of the social comment can be related to any era, Golding wrote it about the Second World War.
