Women and Land Rights

             1. Land ownership is a human right and a right that women could access anytime they wanted. In other words, land right is a human right that women and men should have equal rights to. However, in Tonga, women only received titles under their names when they become widowed, and their sons are preferred to daughters when inheriting property. This is to say that the Tongan system obstructs women ownership of land.
             2. The right to land issues may be characterized by the high level of gender inequality. More than often, the main argument against women owning land is the sentiment of beliefs which have been instilled that land should be granted to men because they are the heads of the households who are also perceived to be the ones responsible for the sustenance of their family. This ignored the fact that in Tonga it is in fact the women who are now largely responsible for income earning and security of the family. More to the point, there may be more female-headed households now a days than male.
             3. Land here in Tonga is a commodity which linked to economic investment and development. Yet women are not given the rights to enjoy or to share with the men this economic affluence unless they derive it from their relationship to their husbands, their brothers, their fathers or the culture. I believe that women should have access to land and a legal framework should also be formulated to see that this rights is protected. If we need to have justice in our country, we need to exercise equal treatment and equal access to land rights for both women and men.
             4. Land is an important asset and in countries like Tonga where agriculture dominates, ownership of land is politically significant and directly associated with power.
