Frederick Turner's Frontier

             America: The Land of Social Opportunity
             The popular phrase, "America is the land of opportunity," most definitely insinuates many possibilities which can range from any aspect of modern popular culture. In two articles, "Among Black Voters, a Fervor to Make Their Ballots Count," by Jim Dwyer and "After 30 Years, Hispanic Leader is Retiring From Advocacy Group," by Thomas Crampton, the commonplaces of social opportunity in America are defined. Based on Frederick Turner's views on the American frontier and its opportunities, one could definitely agree that America has continuously become a melting pot for all ethnicities.
             The modern frontier of America is one that brings all ethnicities together into one group. Turner believed that all foreigners who immigrated to America in the eighteenth century slowly merged to form a united race. He states, "In the crucible of the frontier the immigrants were Americanized, liberated, and fused into one mixed race" (Turner 619). Today, African Americans have united to support Democrats in Presidential elections. According to Jim Dwyer, African Americans have been a "reliable reservoir" for Democrats during presidential elections for over forty years (A1). La Raza, one of America's most prominent Hispanic advocacy organizations, joins all Hispanic Americans around the country to give them a voice (Crampton A14). One unquestionably can assume that Hispanics, along with African Americans, unite themselves for a common cause; just as Turner had predicted. However, one might also suggest that Americans have lost touch with Turner's essential idea; He believed that all Americans should unite whether they be Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, or of any other ethnicity.
