No man has ever been able to live outside of his time and his culture so it is near impossible to try and understand the exact thoughts and emotions behind actions of persons from the past, yet what Ludwig Feuerbach says about religion seems to apply in this case. Feuerbach would argue that religions are projections of the wishes and needs of humanity. For Native Americans there would have been essentials to sustain life, things such as crops, rain, and other sources of food, thus it would make perfect sense for the Native Americans to deify a particular substance in hopes that it would bring them good fortune and long life.
             Although the early Native Americans were polytheistic, many of them still believed in a distant High God. However, this ultimate being actually took no interest in their daily lives and so accordingly, was not frequently worshipped. The worship of the Native American typically involved rituals of song, dance, chants, prayer and simple offerings. These rituals characteristically were not specifically designed for worship, rather for renewing the partnership between the humans the deities whom they revered. This is in direct relation to the way William James thought about religion. James states that religion consists of "the belief that there is an unseen order and that our supreme good lies in harmoniously adjusting ourselves thereto". The profoundness of this statement and relation to the Native Americans is not in the mere fact that there is an unseen order, rather in the idea that to receive the supreme good one must be in tune with the deity.
