Although Pip's first encounter with Herbert is not a very good one, he develops to into one of Pip's best friends. Pip and Herbert work well together and make best of whatever situation with which they are faced. "But there was a calm, a rest, a virtuous hush consequent on these examinations of our affairs that gave me, for the time, an admirable opinion of myself" (294).
