Catch-22 takes place in the closing months of World War II, on the island of Pisona, and brief parts in Rome. The main characters are Captain Joseph Yossarian, Orr, his roommate, Lieutenant Milo Mindbender, Chaplain Albert Taylor Tappman, Corporal Whitcomb, Dunbar, Nately, Doc Daneeka, and Colonel Cathcart. The conflict in this story is Yossarians idea that everyone in the world is out to kill him. He understands this completely and tries to get grounded to go home, but catch-22 will not let him, catch-22 states if you're crazy, then Yossarian would fly the mission, but if he's not crazy and does not want to fly the missions, then he's perfectly capable of flying the missions. Despite this, Yossarian tries many strategies that will enable him to be grounded and go home. At first, he flees to the hospital ward, where he's given food in exchange for censoring enlisted officer's letters. Next, in combat, he takes desperate action not to be killed once he turns back from a mission claiming his intercom was broken. When Yossarian's squadron is volunteered for a mission, he moves the bomb line to make everybody think the airstrike was called off. Despite all of these tricks to get out of flying missions, Yossarian is still haunted by images of his comrades dying in combat. The climax occurs when Yossarian realizes the number of missions he'll be forced to fly will continuously increase as long as Colonel Cathcart remains in charge of the squadron. Colonel Cathcart finally decides Yossarian will never give in to the system and offers him a deal that will no longer allow him to fly missions. He'll be sent home; in return, all Yossarian has to do is like him; if he refuses, which he does, he will be court marshaled for being involved in black market practices. Yossarian despises this deal and runs away to avoid being court marshaled. In the end, Yossarian caught up with Orr, who had faked a plain crash to escape the war. Yossarian...
