A. B. Hollingsworth's book, Flatbellies, is classified as a "golf book"; however, this novel is about much more than just golf. It's about life. It chronicles the adventures of the five members of the El Viento High School golf team in their final year of high school. Kyle "Chipper" DeHart, Jay Justice, Peachy Waterman, L.K. Taylor, and Buster Nelson must work together to cope with humiliation, fear, tragedy, and ultimately triumph. Throughout their adventures, this menagerie must learn to look past their differences and frustrations to work together and unite as an all-star golf team to win the coveted state championship.
             To accomplish this ultimate triumph, the team, with the suggestion of Peachy, first visits the voodoo mistress Jenniquita. Jenniquita prophesizes of the flatbellies uniting together to become the champions of Oklahoma high school golf. However, according to her prophecy, before this can happen, the team must complete two tasks. Jenniquita tells the disjointed golfers "Gird the loins with scarlet blood," and "rise to the point most high" (Chpt 47, Pg 269). While the voodoo mistress may not have meant these in a literal form, the team decides not to take any chances.
             If you look around any high school in America, the day of any big game, you will see football or basketball players dressed in their uniforms. The golfers of El Viento believed that the only way in which they can truly become a team is to first get uniforms. However, the El Viento golf team did not want just any uniform; they needed to "gird the loins with scarlet blood" (Chpt 47, Pg 269). Peachy acquired three boxes of RIT red dye and had each of his golf buddies bring in a pair of wheat colored Bermudas. In the words of Peachy Waterman, "Presto, chango...behold!
