             Themes of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
             "Looks may be deceiving", a famous saying learned by many people is strongly stressed in the novel, one flew over the cuckoo's nest. Ken Kesey portrays the appearance vs. reality through characters, and description of the psychiatric hospital.
             Throughout the novel, readers meet new characters and get to know the
             characters on a more personal level. In the beginning of the novel readers are
             introduced to a six foot- seven Indian, named chief Bromden. Bromden has convinced everyone in the ward that he is "deaf and dumb", which is a very intelligent thing to do. When the narrator has his hallucinations, and he just sits by himself in the room, he almost convinces the audience that he is deaf and dumb. Although everyone sees him as useless, he hears all information and he sees everything that goes on in the ward. He spends his days observing the halls, the day room and the nurse's office, and he is actually a reliable source for information on any person or thing. Chief bromden has the appearance of a deaf and dumb giant, while in actuality he has the intelligence and insight of a normal person. Nobody in the ward pays much attention to bromden, and he likes his peace and quiet, he minds his own business same as everyone else. Although bromden may appear to be completely harmless, and worthless, he manages to dig deep down inside him to find the evilness to kill randy.
             Randy McMurphy is the protagonist in this novel; he serves as the Christ figure to the other patients. He is a short, red head tough guy. He walks into the ward laughing and telling lies of all the places he's been and all the women he's done, and everyone thinks he's god. Randy jumps at the opportunity to become the leader, like he is some big hot shot. He tries to lead the other patients against evil, which in this case is Nurse Ratchet, and they follow.
