Poverty is not considered to be something that is looked upon well by most people. In fact most people try to ignore that it is even there, but whether they would like to admit it or not, poverty is there. Not only can it be found in third-world countries, but it is also found in our own United States of America and other thriving nations around the world. Poverty is not something that people try to obtain. It is more something that people suddenly find themselves in whether they were born into it or not. In a lot of cases of poverty today, it is because of a spouse's death that the other is now in poverty. Is there a relationship between poverty and the gender of those that are in it? I think that there are links between poverty and a person's gender.
             One major question that is brought up in the discussion of poverty is the question, "Are women poorer than men in society?" It has been shown in many studies that it is true that in poverty there are more women than there are men. I think that one reason for this is because most of the higher paying jobs out there are occupied by men, and most jobs held by women are not paying as much. "Women's earnings are considerably lower than men's, approximately 70 cents to every man's dollar" (Albelda 1). Also there are a lot of women without jobs. They are known as housewives. They depend on their spouse to produce the family income.
             The problem occurs when the man of the house dies or maybe even leaves the family. The woman's dependency on her spouse to produce the family income is now vanished, and she is forced to find help. Her help may come from either finds a job for herself or maybe even receiving help from the government. If she were to take the help of the government, she would be on what is known as welfare.
