In the play Death of a Salesman dreams are what guide the course of the events in the plot. Dreams are goals but they are also illusions, they are not reality, but can be transformed. There are other themes that lie on the surface of the text. These themes are sex, honesty, and maturity. These themes will be examined as well as the overarching theme of dreams to discuss the true meaning of Death of a Salesman. In the book, dreams are everywhere, whether asleep or awake, a dream is a dream and it can be good or bad.
The occurrence of sex in this text is minimal yet it has a drastic effect on the relationship between Willy and Biff. "You fake! You Phony little fake! You fake!" Sex caused Biff and Willy to quarrel, but although sex causes this dispute, the overarching cause of the dispute is the theme of dreams. Right before Willy is caught by Biff he is dreaming in bed with the woman. In this event there is appearance of sex, but it is merely just branch off of the main theme of dreams. When Willy is with the woman she says to him, "Willy, Willy, are you going to get up, get up, get up, get up?"(Act II, 114) Willy is in a dream when Biff knocks on the door. This shows that dreams are happening while the theme of sex overlaps it on the surface. Dreams are an illusion for Willy and in this dream he has a women that pleasures him. Therefore the theme of sex is within the thme of dreams because a dream is a illusion and The Women is Willy's illusion. Secondly, Willy, Biff and Happy are all dishonest. Willy cheats on his wife, Biff "borrows" a football and Happy takes bribes at work. Happy says to Biff when they are talking, "Like I'm not supposed to take bribes, Manufacturers offer me a hundred-dollar bill now and then throw an order their way" (Act 1, 43) Dishonestly is evident in the book, but again, it is a subtext of what is really going on.
