Jane Austen's romantic fiction, "Pride and Prejudice" has been successfully transformed into a post-modern romantic comedy "Bridget Jones's Diary", composed by Helen Fielding/ Sharon Maguire. Both Texts display a significant difference in the historical, situational and cultural context. The contexts presented are essential for interpreting the values, manners, and conventions of the time. The contexts along with the techniques also assist the responders to construct the form and meaning of each text and differentiate the critical issues behind them. Pride and Prejudice follow Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters as they navigate the social setting of local 18th-century England. It was written by Jane Austen in the late 1700's, the most eventful time in Britain's history. Many events such as the industrial revolution, Napoleon War took place. Jane Austen grew up in the rural part of England and was greatly exposed to the average country life and was not quite familiar with the political aspects of her country. One reason why the Napoleonic Wars did not affect the English in the rural areas very much was that the war was fought entirely on foreign soil or at sea, and they did not involve very large numbers of Englishmen and also without television, radio, telephones and cars, news travelled slowly. So in "Pride and Prejudice" she reflects her understanding of active involvement with "ordinary" people. However she does make some reference to the militia, which was allocated to all the towns in England. The militias were admired by society, especially the young girls. "The attention of the younger ones was then no longer to be gained by him. Their eyes were immediately wandering up in the street in quest of the officers". Also, while Austen was composing pride and prejudice, the industrial revolution was reaching its height, and a new middle class of prosperous factory owners was emerging.
