Summary: Beautiful Joe was a brown, medium sized dog. Joe was not beautiful nor was he a thoroughbred. He was only a cur. Along with 6 brothers and sisters, Joe was born in a stable on the outskirts of a small town called Fairport. The first year of Joe's life was very hard. One day his mother's owner (Mr. Jenkins) came into the stable and killed all his brothers and sisters. Jenkins also killed his mother and Joe was so furious he jumped at Jenkins and bit him in the ankle. Mr. Jenkins was so furious he cut off Joe's ears and tail. A man riding by heard Joe's howling and took him home. The man fixed Joe up as much he could but Joe would never have his ears or tail back.
Afterwards, a young woman named Miss Laura took care of Joe and Joe became very fond of her. Miss Laura took Joe everywhere she went. One exciting night for Joe was when he saved everyone from a fire. Joe and Miss Laura had been sleeping in the neighbour's house, when he heard a sound coming from downstairs. Joe went down to investigate and he found Mr. Jenkins trying to set the place on fire. Jenkins fled from the scene, but Joe chased him down and then the police moved in. Joe was highly rewarded for his bravery.
That summer Joe went with Miss Laura to Riverdale to stay at her aunt and uncle's farm. Joe and Laura learned all about plants and animals on the farm. Once when everyone was eating dinner a frog jumped up on the table and Joe also jumped on the table. Joe grabbed the frog with his teeth and took it away from everyone. Another thing Joe loved to do was run around with the horses and other animals. He would always sit and watch the sheep with Miss Laura and sometimes she would give them salt.
