Duties of a Vice President: an Empirical Study

Addressed in the excerpt from the book "Occupational Stress" by Jerrold Greenburg, is some of the causes and reasoning behind stress found in the work place. To understand why a person experiences stress at work, we must look at some of the causes, and how an employee is able to relieve these stresses. Also touched on by Greenberg's article are some of the physiological and psychological affects that occupational stress can have on a person. In this paper, I will compare the studies of Jerrold Greenburg with the analytical results of my interview.
On Wednesday, November 12, 2003, I performed an interview on a specific specimen that I believe represents National Western Life Insurance well with over eight years of experience at the company, as well as more than fifteen years prior experience in the insurance business. Larry W, the subject of the interview holds the position of Vice President of Policy Owner Services. His job requisite includes dealing with the complaints of policy owners, as well as the complaints and concerns of more than eighty employees working under him. Being that the company is an international corporation, Larry must also deal with the conflicts caused by the language barriers between him and his customers.
Now that you have a feel for Larry's occupation, it might be easier to understand the factors that cause stress and the affects such a load bearing position has on a person.
In the interview, I asked four generalized questions that could expand into a more detailed response, and touch on some of the specifics involved in Larry's particular line of work. 1) Is occupational stress a serious problem in your job position? 2) In what ways do the affects of occupational stress show in your work? In the work of your employees? 3) What are some solutions to the problem of occupational stress? 4) How effective have solutions been to the problem of occupational stress?
