She had gained weight but they were told that she would be developing much slower than expected because she started off so small. It wasn't until Nicole was two and a half years old that they discovered that she was mentally retarded and were told that she may never exceed the mental capacity of a five year old. So now not only did Matt and Sandra have to deal with their new born son, David, but with the shock of learning their daughter was retarded.
Guilt was a big emotion felt by Sandra. She also panicked at first too because she thought Nicole didn't stand a chance of surviving much longer if they didn't get some kind of miracle help. Matt kept worrying about the mess he knew was inevitable financially which also led to guilt because they would have to sacrifice things like toys and new clothing for their son to be able to still put food on the table.
