The key to using EBP seems to be in the methods of dissemination used to make research available to and understood by a wide range of people who can then act on the research. In the case of children and young people this can range from policy makers in education and health care, to teachers and other professionals who directly interact with children and young people, to parents and how they raise their children, and even to children and young people themselves and how they may or may not modify their behaviour. EBP is extremely relevant in a variety of settings involving children and young people as it allows groups interested in research findings to incorporate research across a broad spectrum of social issues and (hopefully) successfully make a difference in the lives of children and young people. Whilst most research can probably be used as EBP by an interested party, it may be difficult for those of us who are not interested in a particular topic to see just how relevant that research is!
             Much of our school system has been defined and policy made by the dissemination of research involving children and young people to policy makers within the Department of Education, school governors, head teachers and teachers. Since 1997 the Labour government has initiated the Sure Start programme. This is an excellent example of a nationwide use of EBP.
