The Wild Geese

How many people stand and stare at the "geese appear high over us?" In our modern world our lives are increasingly controlled by technology, many of us have lost connection with the natural world. The poem "The Wild Geese" by Wendell Berry depicts author's sensations and appreciation towards nature and his exceptional love towards the season autumn. Author's choice of words also creates a peaceful mood; Wendell employs words such as "marrow", "quiet" and "ancient faith" to illustrate his admiration towards nature and peace. In line 11, it states, "Geese appear high over us, pass, and the sky closes. Abandon, as in love or sleep, holds them to their way, clear, in the ancient faith: what we need is here." Every autumn Geese fly in a V-shaped formation towards south; to many people, this might seem very normal, yet Wendell is struck by the elegance and simplicity of this beautiful pattern. As they fly, it seems like there is an exudation of peacefulness, it states in line 16, "And we pray, not new earth or heave, but to be quiet in heart." Author's choice of words reveals a deep gentleness in his soul. The poem "The Wild Geese" by Wendell Berry expresses his profound passion towards nature and his desire for peace.
I enjoy this poem very much, because it is very true that our lives get busier and busier everyday; people focus more on the materialistic things rather than our nature. Wars and violence happens everyday in our life, but nature has the power to separate us from the violent and money-oriented world. I truly believe that nature is an essential piece of our lives, it is stunning, bright and it creates a sense of peacefulness.
