South Park: Funny Or Offensive?

             Television shows were made to appeal to their audiences. They were designed to make people laugh, cry, scream, or learn. Sometimes a show draws responses or feelings from the audience. People find some shows as funny, until they realize that the comedy may be based on a serious issue. These responses or feelings come from thinking about the show. The South Park episode 509, called "Osama Bin Laden Has Farty Pants," caused me to have mixed responses -- feelings of humor, yet at the same time, seriousness.
             Many scenes in this South Park episode caused me to laugh. There was a funny scene in the beginning when Butters fainted from holding his breath to save himself from anthrax, while the school bus leaves him behind. I also laughed when Stan's mother lay on the couch after watching television programs about terrorism for eight weeks straight. The scene in which the military officers used explosives to open the big, brown box from Afghanistan was funny. A humorous moment occurred when all the military officers at the base thought the goat from Afghanistan was Stevie Nicks. I laughed when Cartman farted on the twenty-hour airplane ride to Afghanistan, too. The funniest part of the episode was at the end of the show, when Cartman took care of Osama bin Laden.
             But some scenes in this South Park episode were not funny when I saw the show at first. The scene in which Cartman says that he wants to buy chocolate milk for one dollar instead of giving money to the Afghan children and forcing him to buy regular milk for ten cents was insensitive toward the people in Afghanistan. I was disturbed when watching the depiction of the children of Afghanistan trying to find something to do when everything was being bombed by the United States.
