TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD MOVIE VS. BOOK

             There are many similarities and differences in the book To Kill A Mockingbird and the film that was based upon it. The three main differences are the absence of characters, the manipulation of major themes and the scenes that accompany them, and the variation of the point of view. Overall, the book and the movie share the same morals. They also portray the same basic storyline, although the movie lacks the details contained in the book. For the 129-minute allotted running time of the film, the director did a satisfactory job involving what he thought was the main point of the book.
             A noticeable discrepancy in the film and the book is the absence of characters. One important character in the book that did not appear in the movie is Aunt Alexandra. In the book, she moved in with the Finches to be a female role model for Scout, but spent most of her time nagging the family and sharing her opinions about the townspeople's social status. Another missing character was Mr. Dolphus Raymond. He was a key character in the development of the racial injustice theme. Scout and Dill ********ed that he did not drink whiskey from a paper sack – it is really Coke – and he only staggers through the town like a chronic alcoholic so that he has an excuse for his colored wife.
             The major themes of the book are adapted to place the focus on racism in the South during the 1930's. The three summers in the book are compacted into one summer and a half. In the movie, Scout and Jem help develop the theme of racism by giving a child's perspective on the events. The movie directs little or no attention to
             maturing Scout. The film ignores the confusion Scout felt when an obviously innocent man was found guilty. The movie depicts the story as a strong-willed lawyer fighting to save a black man in a hopeless case, but the book made the children the focal point of the situations.
